Rydia's Biography
A young girl born with extraordinary powers to summon spirits from the Phantom Realm.
Seven years prior to the beginning of Final Fantasy IV, a fair maiden of the Village of Mist gave birth to a baby girl with the pure bloodlines of the tribe of summoners. She grew up in the care of her mother and father, as well as the guardianship of all in her village.
As a pure-blood female member of the summoner tribe, her spiritual powers are very keen and with time and proper training, she has the ability to become a powerful summoner. Because of this she studies the arts of magick and summoning from her Mother and others in the village.
Rydia is a ebullient girl, with a redoubtable spirit. She is very strong willed and does not back down from a challenge. We meet Rydia very early in Final Fantasy IV when Cecil and Cain go to the Village Mist, from there a series of unfortunate events sweep her into the current of the story and later into the tides of the Phantom Realm...
Summoners
An ancient tribe of people with strong spiritual powers, an whose numbers are quickly waning.
People with the ability to call upon the powers of "Phantom Beasts" or "Ediolons" from the "Phantom Realm" are known as summoners. People with these abilities are part of an ancient race known as the Tribe of Summoners, over the centuries their bloodlines have thinned and so have their collective powers. While descendants of the tribe live all over throughout the world, a small enclave of pure-blood summoners still remain in the valley of mist, secluded in the mountains between Baron, Damcyan, and Troia. This area is said to be in the closest "alignment" to the ley-lines of the spiritual Phantom Realm. While these summoners are reclusive and disdain world political affairs, there is a small village in the mountain pass between Baron and Damcayn simply known as the Village of Mist. Here the summoners do trade with the traveling caravans and provide respite for weary travelers plying the routes between the two kingdoms.
Those of the tribe who live in the Mist Valley have continued to maintain the ancient bloodlines by marrying within only those who have summoner blood, however time and simple mathematical certainty has dwindled the number of these combinations of the few who remain, thus the continuation of these bloodlines is quite doubtful.
While all who carry summoner blood have the innate ability to summon Ediolons, with proper training, in general young females are the most capable. To summon an Ediolon, the Ediolon must first test the summoner to prove that she or he is pure of mind and heart. Once satisfied the Ediolon agrees to serve the summoner when the summoner calls upon their help.
Because of their keen relationship with the spirtual aether, summoners are naturals at the other magicks, and often know and study the arcane spells of both black and white magick.

Summon
The ability to call forth the Ediolons of the Phantom Realm to one's aid.
One who has the blood of the Tribe of Summoners may, with the proper training, be capable of enduring the tests of the Ediolons — denizens of the Phantom Realm. Those who can prove their mettle to an Ediolon may be granted the power to call forth the beast and bend it to their will. Although perhaps the description of the summoner's power over the Ediolon is somewhat misleading. It is the respect of the summoner's abilities by the Ediolon which allows the summoner to command them. The Ediolon's test is very important, if a summoner were to attempt to call forth an Ediolon which was more powerful and wary of the summoner, the Beast may become uncontrollable and would run rampant upon any who stood against it. Thus it is vital that the summoner and the Ediolon have a knowledge and trust of eachother.
